Expect that to be a major focus in the HBO Max series.John Cena is currently enjoying an impressive run in the world of superhero movies thanks to his role in DC's Peacemaker, which has manifested in his own solo series on HBO Max after his introduction in The Suicide Squad. But ultimately, Peacemaker is less an outright villain than a misguided killer with a mountain of psychological issues. But the DC version is a much darker take on the character and has definitely committed some heinous acts in the name of peace. The pre-DC Comics version of Peacemaker could probably be labeled a hero, as he relied on non-lethal means of fighting crime. The character rose to prominence in the late '80s, a time when characters like Punisher and Wolverine popularized a new wave of darker, more violent and more morally gray anti-heroes. Out of all the gun-toting vigilantes in comics, Peacemaker is among the hardest to pin down as a hero or villain. Originally, creators Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons pitched the story with the Charlton characters rather than their analogues, meaning Peacemaker's murder would have been the driving mystery behind the series. The Question became Rorschach, Blue Beetle became Nite Owl, etc. In fact, all the main characters in the series are effectively parodies of the Charlton Comics characters DC acquired in the '80s. Watchmen's Comedian is a close riff on Peacemaker. While Peacemaker may have been a fairly obscure DC character prior to his live-action debut, there's a different version of the character even casual superhero fans may recognize. That finally changed with DC's relaunched 2021 comic, however, with the series capitalizing on the character's live-action debut. Unlike the DCEU, Peacemaker has never traditionally been a member of the Suicide Squad in the comics. He served as a partner and mentor to Jaime for a short time. Smith was also identified as a potential recruit of the fear-powered Sinestro Corps because of the terror he had inflicted as Peacemaker, but the yellow power ring ultimately rejected him. He was said to have been killed at the hands of Eclipso on a mission for Checkmate (a division of Task Force X, the same super-secret government organization that spawned the Suicide Squad), but years later he returned to the hero business to help new Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes. His fragile state of mind made him an unpredictable asset, and the Agency attempted to keep him as stable as possible through therapy and highly trained agents working with him. Peacemaker operated under the Agency, a secret government organization that sent the well-armed warrior on anti-terrorism missions around the world.
